bio

Carla is in the first year of her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Waterloo, and is working under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan Oakman, Director of the Psychological Intervention Research Team.

Her research interests are centered on two foci: 1) discerning the conceptual boundaries of mentalization, a multifaceted and overarching construct; and 2) elucidating whether the acquisition of DBT skills is the successful component of DBT fostering numerous positive outcomes, including reduced symptomology and improved quality of life.

Carla’s MA thesis examined the psychometric soundness of various measures of mentalizing, how well each measure aligned with a widely held multidimensional framework, and the degree of convergence between self-report and task-based measures.

She plans to continue building on this line of inquiry throughout her graduate studies, however, her dissertation work will be focused on the second arm of her research interests.

In terms of clinical work, Carla recently completed a practicum at St. Joseph’s Healthcare where she conducted psychodiagnostic assessments and delivered CBT services to individuals suffering with pervasive symptoms of anxiety and low mood.

She also provides assessment and therapy services through the Centre for Mental Health Research and Treatment at the University of Waterloo.
